Week Something or Something at the Fairmont

I couldn't tell you how many weeks I've spent in LA during the past two months, but I can tell you this.

I feel incredibly luckily to finally sell a couple of spots and have this experience. Despite being on the tail end of my fourth commercial, today was my first solo transfer. I dreamt all night about white whites and magentas with more blue or less red. I hope I didn't fuck it up.

I've begun to recognize the Alaska flight attendants and I just wish they would change out their in-flight magazine. I can't read about those same beaches anymore. God damn it, I can't even look at the ads.

Every time I land in Seattle and catch a cab home, I'm nearly brought to tears when the city comes into view. I absolutely love that place and everything it has to offer. It feels like my city. I do not feel this way about LA. In fact, I get car sick every single time I take a cab from the hotel to the airport, or vice versa.

I love the Fairmont hotel. I love seeing people from other agencies at the bar and the sense of competition that comes from their proximity. And I love that every staff member has been hugging me and welcoming me back for another week.

My nose cannot handle the weekly transition from 80 degrees to 30. I keep getting sick. But. I'd say it's worth it. I'll shove a tampon up my nose if it means I can spend another week here and a weekend at home.

I have a really good friend. A really good friend allergic to cats. Who has watched my cats this entire time. They have yet to turn feral.

And, finally, I just hope we can keep it going. This is the best of what we do.

I've fallen into the routine of commuting to LA during the week and returning to Seattle during the weekend. But despite the routine, I'm still struck with awe every time Seattle comes into view during the cab ride home from the airport. I love this city. The cement factory, the Starbucks building, the stadiums and the giant cranes at the port. And then the skyscrapers and piers and Sculpture Park and finally my own neighborhood boasting the original UFO-on-a-stick.

They say you shouldn't stay at your first agency too long, but four years in and I can't imagine ever leaving this place. A remarkable city and an agency that sends me to LA for 6 weeks in the dead of winter. I think this is why we don't mind the hours, the clients, the attitudes and the banner ads. Oh the banner ads.

I'm in my fourth week at the Fairmont. I've got a one bedroom apartment in the grandma tower this time. Enough space to lose my cell phone every time I put it down.

It seems Advertising is at the Fairmont this week, as well. In our usual perch at the bar last night, we had Martin to our left, Pub Dallas to our right and an FCB or BDGreyOWK something or something mixed in. There was potential for awkward. And I left when CDs decided it was time to kick some ass.

You wouldn't believe how many over-the-counter-drugs I have put into my body in the past three days. Or how much fake vitamin C. None of it has done any good.

My nose has only rebelled this severely twice in my life. Once two weeks ago. During my Christmas "vacation." And once when I was in college and paid $1,000 to be infected with a virus.

I'm convinced the virus has reawaken deep in my sinus membranes. As I recall, when I was first infected, I would be sick for a week, and then well for a week. And then sick for a week. And then well for a week. It was almost enough to finally drive away roommate.

But now I'm not 20. I'm not in college. And I'm not getting paid to blow my nose into a bag and weigh the amount of snot I make each day.

This is some serious bullshit.

I'm on my third week at the Fairmont.

Sitting on my balcony on the good side of the good tower overlooking the pier and the water. It's January 3rd and 77 degrees outside. I'm blinded by the sun reflecting off my white, white skin. I have two hours before I need to be anywhere and I'm leisurely scheming how to win the next brief and keep the vacation going a month longer. This is perfect.

Oh, and the spots are looking good, too.

It took a day to make this dough and more than one attempt.

Wa-bam! The recipe said it would make 12 doughnuts. I'm still not sure what happened to the other five.

First time frying with oil and I didn't even singe the kitchen. Or my own flesh.

The firsties. I ate the doughnut hole immediately. It tasted... awesome!

I would love to have a doughnut shop one day. I'll set up in a city that isn't already familiar with the delights of creative doughnuts. Maybe it'll even be international. Do they have doughnut shops in Madrid? London? Sydney?

Each doughnut could represent a different country. A really big and fattening one for the USA. Maybe a chili chocolate for Mexico. Boy, my concepting buds are already tingling.

And because today is yesterday's tomorrow, I've just attempted my first creation. It was a dismal fail. The dough was more like cake batter. But, if you don't succeed at first, try try again. We'll get there. The International Doughnut.

When my brother and I were young, my Dad did a lot of small time acting in various films. He was mostly part of the background crew and sometimes he would bring my brother and I along. With 50 or 60 extras on a set, it's easy enough to sneak in a couple more. I even scored a couple of parts in period pieces and got all dolled up in hoop skirts and pantaloons. Pretty cool stuff.

But as an extra, I never really got to wander around the sets all that much. Those private trailers seemed so cool and elusive. For the famous people. And I never got to set foot on a sound stage or work with real directors.

Enter advertising. As an art director on photo and commercial shoots, I'm the client. I've directed directors. I've had my own trailer. I've sat through days of casting and made the decisions. And, yes, I've eaten a lot of breakfast burritos.

It sounds arrogant, like I've got a fat head. But it's really just more a nod to advertising. We get paid to do this shit. Sometimes, I really really hate it. But right now... I just feel so lucky.

I made the effort to get a pumpkin and carve it. Three days later I peaked inside and it was full of white cotton candy. Ok, really it was mold. Just brimming to the top with mold. It turned so quickly.

And, for some reason, I ordered 10 pounds of potatoes from a guy at work. He owns a farm and has his young children tend crops while he makes his ads. He even takes pictures of them harvesting and tilling soil and sends them out with his weekly produce list. They look so happy. Maybe that's why I got the potatoes. Regardless, it's a lot of tatters and I'm afraid they'll turn as quickly as the pumpkin. It's something in the air. Mold grows on everything. The walls, the ceiling, the original pink ceramic bathroom fixtures.

It's been a great week.

Even as I sit in the meeting with all the big boys talking about why my shit was shit, I feel jubilant.

I'm waiting for a 9:30pm meeting. I'm surrounded by my friends and we're slowly but surely getting shit-faced on Jack while we wait for the pizza to arrive. And then, in teams of two we'll line up in front of the firing squad and if we're lucky we'll get to work all night towards an 8am deadline.

And then, in 24 hours I'll find out if I'm spending the next 3 months in LA. I could pee myself with both excitement and drunkness.

We've been one of those agencies that keeps account nerds and creative folks as far away from each other as possible. The two sides were clearly separated by a massive, echoing airplane-hanger-like lunchroom.

No longer.

Once we're finished consolidating the entire agency into the creative space by week's end, we'll have AEs next to ADs, CWs next to PMs, CDs mixed in with the CCOs, CEO, COO and CFO. Planners, Producers and Project Managers will be all over the place. Yeah, we'll be one of those agencies.

Plus, we'll have another agency stashing 60 new faces on the other side of the hanger.

Like a little kid on christmas morning, I've been running around gleefully all week. Big change. The biggest yet. I'm excited.

I had a terrible dream last night. I had a baby deer in my hands, a fawn. And I was trying to kill it. At first, I thought I would strangle it. The lack of oxygen would kill this massive animal. But then I decided, after looking into his eye, that I should break his neck. Quicker. I grabbed this baby deer, in all the vivacity you can imagine, and I tried to break his neck. I held his body with my body and I grabbed his head, and I tried to rotate it. It was so much harder, and dragged out, than I ever imagined. I thought it would be quick. I kept trying and trying to make that "snap" thinking it would be so much quicker than suffocation. Eventually, after a long time, and a whole lot of agony to the animal, I snapped his neck.

I felt so bad. I can't even kill a spider in waking life. I hate killing things.

And today. I finally found a new pot and some soil for a plant I rescued a year or two ago. It was in a CD's office. When he (the plant) started to die, I named him Moby because he turned all white... like the great whale. And I watered and talked to him for a looong time. He became quite the celebrity around here. A surviver. Like our agency. But he really, really needed a bigger pot and new soil. Something to help him grow.

Today I... cut his head off. I tried to twist it off at first. Like in the dream. I tried to twist his head right off his body. And when it didn't work, I grabbed a knife and cut it off. The stem was all sorts of twisted and couldn't support the weight of his body and leaves. You're supposed to cut them off at that point, right?

I replanted the body and stub of a neck.

I felt like I killed a baby.

I don't know what's going to happen.

I cried a whoooole lot.

Did I kill my baby? I'm crying now instead of art directing these ads.

I think I did something really, really wrong.

Later: The internet tells me you can cut off and bury parts of these guys to make new plants. Well, I kind of cut off the entire plant, but maybe he'll root. I hope he does.

A Little AD Exercise

For months, I've been working on this project. It's nothing I can put in my book and only maybe something I could ever talk about on an interview. The gist of it is that I have a list of buzz words and abstract concepts that I need to represent visually. One image. Not an ad. No logos. No copy. Can't be trite, contrived or expected. And it has to be powerful enough to make a room full of men in suits fork over several million dollars. No pressure.

I've looked at several thousand images. Covered walls with a few hundred. And maybe found 2. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The point? More than any newspaper ad or billboard or "rich media unit," this project is making me a better art director.

And I have found some really, really weird scrap on Getty:

24 hours after writing this post, I got an email stating there was a little miscommunication with the client and this project would no longer be going forward. I would be so bummed if I didn't see the value in the experience. The two months of image searching experience.

I wish I could blog with the honesty and finesse of George Tannenbaum. I have so many stories to share. So many experiences at an agency with one big client. So many insights from an agency that has invented and reinvented itself four times in three years. So much to share about the journey from an eager, wide-eyed ad school graduate to a run-of-the-mill art director.

But, I've got the fear. The fear of transparency and consequences. George is a ballsy guy, but probably because he earned the right to be. I can do little more than keep my head down and get the work done.

I started this blog in 2007 during my summer internship at Y&R Chicago. Like looking at old high school pictures, I cringe at how young, naive and open I was about the whole experience, but being able to read my own perspective about it today is priceless.

The best partner I've ever worked with put in his notice a few weeks ago. He was well liked and had his hands in every pie. He was also the hub of all agency gossip and activated his phone tree every time he heard a juicy piece of news. I rode his coat-tails onto every decent project I ever got. Sooner or later, he'll be a legend industry-wide. He's already a legend here.

And he's had no fewer than half a dozen going-away parties and send-offs. The latest was last night. We huddled together in a small, run-down asian bar with one elderly waitress who couldn't keep her hands off the men. Everyone talked about work and played on their phones. To my left, someone was reading their tweets aloud, to my right someone else was reciting the news feed on their facebook wall. At least four people were playing online Scrabble.

That's when I realized I should start a website where visitors submit pictures of people silently ignoring each other and working their thumbs on their phones. It would be swamped with submissions. I could sell ad space and become a millionaire.

We're having one more send-off today, but instead of going, I'll just tweet, blog and facebook my salutations. Maybe I'll even start a Scrabble game and play works like, "Congratulations," "Adios" and "Good Luck."

The agency is running at about 10% today. Literally, there are about 20 out of 200 people floating around. And this is maybe the 10th day all year that Seattle has graced us with 60+ degree temperatures. What am I getting at?

The 3 hour lunch break.

There's no better time to visit Pike's Place Market than on a weekday afternoon, and today was no exception. The vendors love locals. My gut is full of free fruit. And I got Father's Day squared away a full week in advance.

Able to walk freely without a crowd of tourists forcing me in a single direction, I discovered nooks and crannies I haven't seen in my three years here. A whole shop of "Retro Sodas" and specialty beers and non-boxed wines. A hole-in-the-wall stacked to the ceiling with salmon. And. The best part. A giant case of giant eggs. Turkey. Duck. Emu. Ostrich.

I see exotic omelets in my future.

I'll admit I have a bias against films and novels written in the 80's and 90's. Sprouting from a time so close to modernity yet so far from today, they always seem to fall a little short of reality. It's like watching an early season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Kind of cheesy and completely missing the boat on the cool, stylish factor of 21st century technology. Not to mention having no ability to draw reference to today's social mindset.

I've got to say, I am really digging on some ad blogs right now. Any working CD+ who has the time and volition to blog about advertising, probably has something worthwhile to say. And, they're usually pretty good about being concise.

Contrast this with many ad books. There are isles upon isles of long-winded dissertations that rehash the same themes over and over: "Advertising is changing," "Creatives and clients have to work together," "The key to creativity is..." I find most of these books to be a chore. Some, though, really shine. And they're usually the ones with as much personality and crafty, colloquial writing as a blog.

It's May 10th. We've had about one day of sunlight in Seattle this year and about two days with temperatures above 59 degrees. It has officially been the coldest, darkest year ever.

That being said, the forecast called for 65 and sunny today. By 2pm it was 54 and as grey as ever.

I prayed to baby Jesus, via facebook, to bring the light.

By 3pm it was at least 60 and the sky was blue. I carefully opened a nice big inDesign project on my desk, disabled my screensaver and left a jacket on my chair as I grabbed a new book and headed for Seattle Center. I plopped down near the International Fountain and its jets of water synchronized to music. To the left of me and to the right of me, several business men and women still in suits stared blankly and silently at the fountain.

We were all playing hooky together.

We were rebels.

Tomorrow? 55 and rain.

Today? Jesus saves.

I've become fascinated with The Doughnut Vault. They're only open a few days a week and close once they sell out - which seems to be within the first few hours each day (frequent updates on their twitter page let you know whether or not it's worth waiting in line for a taste). There is a doughnut chain like this in Seattle - Top Pot - and another in Portland - VooDoo. These places are popular. Come to think of it, there's also a little doughnut place in Pike's Place Market, and the line is always HUGE.

Doughnuts are a gold mine.

There are 104 starbucks within a five mile radius of the piers in Seattle. I'm taking a five day stacation in 24 hours. The idea has popped into my head that I should visit all 104 of those starbucks. And document my journey. Twenty-one a day.

If I bought a beverage at each location and my average drink purchase netted out to 4 bucks, I'd be spending what it would cost to visit my folks in Richmond for the weekend. And if even half of those drinks were coffee based, I would die.

This idea is pretty stupid and I'd like to just forget it. But now that the seed has been planted, I have a feeling it's going to blossom into something unignorable.

Flying cross-country today, I ended up sitting next to a crazy woman and her young son. After they sat down, she turned on the kid and slugged him (you should have heard the thud) before slapping him over and over as she screamed, "You never help me! You are so selfish! I've been carrying around all your stuff!" Smack smack smack. The kid tried to cover his face as he screamed, "Stop talking to me! Stop talking to me!" before bawling his eyes out.

Holy. Shit.

I yelled at her, "Hey! It's ok! It's ok!" She stopped and sat very still for about ten minutes as her son sobbed and sobbed and tried to calm himself down. What did everyone else do? Just watch and give me those, "wow, she's awful" looks. After a while, she gave him a big hug and said she loved him.

Liar. She hated him.

The rest of the flight, she kept saying mean, mean things to him like, "God, Ty. You are so selfish. I'm trying to watch a movie. What do you want? Leave me alone! Just leave me alone!" Half way through the flight she snatched away his snack and waved it over his head saying, "You can't have this! You never share!" This was followed by another wave of smacks.

What the hell are you supposed to do in those situations? The flight attendants weren't doing anything. The other people around us were just staring. During the second wave of smacks, I jumped up and ran to the back of the plane and just stood there for a while. She turned around to see where I went. Maybe she wondered if I was telling someone. I wasn't and I didn't.

I didn't do anything.
